Amid escalating violence and recent protests across Manipur, prohibitory orders were implemented in three districts of the state on Tuesday, September 10.
The district administrations of Imphal East and Imphal West announced that a curfew, effective from 11 am, has been imposed due to the deteriorating law and order situation, The Indian Express reported.
Additionally, prohibitory orders under Section 163 (2) of BNSS were imposed in Thoubal, news agency PTI reported.
In Imphal West, the administration has prohibited "the movement of any person(s) outside their residences" until further notice, with exceptions made for essential services and media personnel.
Since September 1, the state has witnessed 11 fatalities from various incidents of ethnic violence. In response, students have organized large-scale protests in the valley regions, particularly in Thoubal and Imphal.
A confrontation between protesters and police in Thoubal resulted in injuries to at least 20 people, including police officers. The police deployed tear gas and stun grenades, while protesters responded by throwing stones.
In Imphal on Sunday evening, demonstrators predominantly women, carrying torches, attempted to breach the official residences of Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya and chief minister N Biren Singh.
Apart from theses, violence erupted in Jiribam district on Saturday morning, leading to five deaths. A man was shot while sleeping at his remote home, about 5 km from the district headquarters.
The incident sparked a fierce gunfight between armed groups from opposing communities in the hills, approximately 7 km from the district headquarters. The clash resulted in the deaths of four armed individuals, including three militants.
On September 6, suspected militants launched a bomb attack in Bishnupur district, damaging at least two structures.
