Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Monday (December 30) condemned the custodial death of a 35-year-old Dalit man in Madhya Pradesh’s Dewas district.
Gandhi alleged that such incidents are not possible without the tacit support of the state government.
“On one hand, a Dalit youth was killed in police custody in Dewas, Madhya Pradesh, while on the other, tribal women were tied to trees and beaten in Balasore, Odisha. Both incidents are deeply saddening, shameful, and highly condemnable.,” Gandhi stated in Hindi in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
He attributed such incidents to the "Manuvadi mindset" of the BJP, asserting that the party's ideology fuels a systemic oppression of marginalized communities in states under its governance.
“These occurrences, fuelled by the Manuvadi ideology of the BJP, are happening repeatedly in states governed by them—such actions are not possible without governmental complicity,” Gandhi said.
Gandhi emphasized that the Congress would not tolerate these injustices.
"Such brutality against the Bahujans of this country will not be tolerated under any circumstances. We stand firmly with them and will fight relentlessly to uphold their constitutional rights and ensure justice is served," he affirmed.
Echoing his sentiments, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi accused the BJP of enabling police oppression of vulnerable communities.
“The custodial death of a Dalit youth in Dewas, Madhya Pradesh, is an extremely serious matter. The family alleges that police brutality led to his death. Similar incidents, such as the reported atrocities against Dalit families and the custodial death of a Dalit youth in Parbhani, Maharashtra, have also come to light,” Priyanka Gandhi posted on X.
The deceased, Mukesh Longre, reportedly died on December 28 while being questioned at the Satwas police station in Dewas.
According to Superintendent of Police Puneet Gehlot, Longre allegedly attempted suicide using a towel to create a noose, tying it to a window grill in the lock-up. He was rushed to a hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
SP Gehlot had clarified that Longre was not formally under arrest and had been summoned to provide a statement in connection with a complaint lodged by a woman.
