The death of a 35-year-old Dalit man, Mukesh Longre, at Satwas police station in Madhya Pradesh's Dewas district has triggered widespread protests and sharp criticism of the state government.
Longre’s family has alleged foul play, accusing the police of murder, while the opposition Congress has slammed the BJP-led state government for what it calls “jungle raj.”
Longre died on Saturday (December 28) while being questioned in connection with a complaint filed against him by a woman on December 26, news agency PTI reported.
Superintendent of Police Puneet Gehlot stated that Longre attempted suicide by using a gamcha (towel) to make a noose, tying it to the window grill in the lock-up, and pulling at his neck. He was rushed to a hospital where doctors declared him dead.
SP Gehlot clarified that Longre was not under arrest but had been called to record his statement.
“Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) Nandani Uikey is conducting an inquiry into the death. The JMFC visited the spot this morning. The district magistrate has appointed three doctors to oversee the post mortem process," he told PTI.
In the wake of the incident, Inspector Ashish Rajput has been suspended, and police have assured compliance with the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and National Human Rights Commission guidelines.
However, Longre’s family has demanded the suspension of the entire police station staff and refused to allow the post-mortem until their demands are met.
The family also alleged that police demanded a bribe to reduce the severity of action against Longre related to the woman’s complaint. They claimed they were informed of his death only after their refusal to pay.
Protests erupted outside the police station on Saturday, continuing through Sunday, with Longre's family accusing the police of custodial murder. The opposition Congress also staged a protest at the site, led by state unit chief Jitu Patwari.
"Jungle raj is prevailing in MP. A Dalit man was murdered inside a police station. CM Mohan Yadav must take full responsibility for this incident," Patwari said.
Former Union minister and Congress leader Arun Yadav also demanded the suspension of the entire Satwas police station staff, intensifying political pressure on the BJP government in the state.
Authorities are grappling with the fallout, as protests and allegations continue to mount over the controversial incident.
