As England put the finishing touches on preparations for their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, an unexpected setback has left the squad scrambling after key equipment, including players’ boots, was stolen en route to their training base in Kansas City.

The incident comes just days before Thomas Tuchel's side begin their campaign against Croatia in a repeat of the 2018 World Cup semi-final.

According to BBC Sport, the vehicles carrying the team's gear to the Swope Soccer Village facility in Kansas City were broken into before the squad's scheduled arrival on Saturday afternoon. The theft reportedly left England with only one football available for training.

The disruption threatens to affect the team's preparations ahead of their first full training session at the complex on Sunday. Besides match boots, the stolen consignment also included analysis equipment, tactical whiteboards and massage tables used by Tuchel and his backroom staff.

Authorities have moved swiftly following the incident. The Kansas City Police Department confirmed that two suspects had been detained.

“Two subjects of interest were taken into custody pending further investigation,” a police spokesperson is quoted as saying by The Guardian.

England head into the tournament after victories over New Zealand in Tampa and Costa Rica in Orlando during their warm-up fixtures. The squad also spent time in West Palm Beach, Florida, for an acclimatisation camp aimed at preparing for the conditions expected during the tournament.

There are still some selection concerns, with Bukayo Saka racing to overcome an Achilles issue, while Ezri Konsa and John Stones are both contenders to partner in central defence, potentially keeping Marc Guéhi out of the starting lineup.

England have been drawn in Group L alongside Croatia, Ghana and Panama. With four World Cup matches already having been staged across Mexico City, Guadalajara, Toronto and Los Angeles, the focus for Tuchel's men now shifts to ensuring the theft does not derail their preparations before they kick off their campaign later this week.
