Curacao's dream debut at the 2026 FIFA World Cup suffered a brutal setback with a 1-7 defeat to Germany, but the Caribbean nation bounced back in remarkable fashion on Saturday (June 20) as goalkeeper Eloy Room produced a record-breaking performance to secure a historic point in a goalless draw against Ecuador at Kansas City Stadium.

Facing relentless pressure throughout their second Group E fixture, the 37-year-old goalkeeper stood firm against wave after wave of Ecuadorian attacks.

Ecuador unleashed 27 shots during the contest, but Room repeatedly denied them, making 15 saves and setting a new World Cup record for the most saves in regulation time. His Player of the Match display also became the second-highest number of saves by a goalkeeper in a World Cup match since records began in 1966.

The Miami FC goalkeeper's heroics helped Curacao earn the first World Cup point in the nation's history. Victory against Ivory Coast in their final group match next Friday would keep alive hopes of an unlikely place in the knockout rounds.

Room's tally surpassed the previous regulation-time mark of 13 saves set by Peru's Ramón Quiroga against the Netherlands at the 1978 World Cup. Only former United States goalkeeper Tim Howard has recorded more saves in a World Cup match, making 16 stops against Belgium in the Round of 16 in 2014, although only 12 came during regulation time.

Born in Nijmegen in the Netherlands, Room rose through the youth ranks at Eredivisie side Vitesse and represented the Netherlands at Under-20 level before switching allegiance to Curacao in 2015.

The decision came after an approach from former Dutch international Patrick Kluivert, who has family roots in Curacao through his mother.

“The whole reason that I chose to play for Curaçao is that I had a dream as a little kid to make it to the World Cup with Curaçao. When [Patrick] Kluivert contacted me to play for Curaçao, first of all, I was really honoured that Kluivert called me because he’s a big legend. I was surprised but also really proud. I was one of the first guys who chose to play for Curaçao as a professional,” Room told in a FIFA interview.

Reflecting on his ties to the island, the veteran goalkeeper said, “When I was young, we went there for vacations to see family. It was always a special moment to go there. The island is beautiful. It’s a warm feeling when you go there and I always feel at home. I still have family living there. Obviously, my father’s from there. My mother also lived in Curaçao for a lot of years when she was younger. We have a deep connection with the island, so I’m so happy to give something back to the people and put Curaçao on the map.”

“And now I think almost everyone in the world knows what Curaçao is.”

After enduring a nightmare against Germany only days earlier, Curacao found a hero between the posts against Ecuador.

Room's extraordinary display ensured that the tournament's smallest debutant would leave Kansas City with a landmark result and a place in World Cup history.
