Maharashtra reported 47 new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday (May 24), with Mumbai continuing to see the highest number of infections, according to data released by the state health department. Of the total new cases, Mumbai accounted for 30, Pune reported seven, Thane logged six, Navi Mumbai recorded three, and one case was reported from Nagpur.

The state also confirmed four COVID-related deaths, including that of a 21-year-old man from Thane. According to health officials, the youth, who had severe diabetes, was admitted to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital and tested positive for the virus before succumbing on Saturday.

In light of the recent uptick in cases, the Maharashtra government has intensified its surveillance efforts to detect and manage COVID-19 infections. Since January, over 7,143 samples have been tested, and 257 individuals have been diagnosed with the virus. Among them, 87 people have recovered, while 166 cases remain active.

Mumbai has seen a sharp rise in cases, particularly in May. Of the city’s 213 total cases recorded so far this year, 207 were reported this month alone. In Pune, all seven new patients displayed only mild symptoms, officials from the Pune Municipal Corporation confirmed.

State health authorities have urged citizens not to panic but to continue following COVID-appropriate behaviour, including maintaining hygiene and being especially cautious if they have comorbid conditions.
