West Bengal has reported four new Covid-19 cases, pushing the total number of active infections in the state to 11, news agency PTI reported, citing a health department official on Monday. Most of the recent cases have emerged from Kolkata and its adjoining areas.
The patients, some exhibiting respiratory symptoms, are currently receiving treatment at both state-run and private hospitals.
"These patients are under observation. The number of patients who tested positive for the contagion was seven till Saturday. Four more cases were reported till Sunday evening," the official said. The state had recorded only one active case as of May 19.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation amid the rise in infections. Of the 11 active cases, six patients have been admitted to a private hospital on EM Bypass, while another is receiving care at a private facility near Minto Park.
In South 24 Parganas district, a 31-year-old woman and a 12-year-old child from the same family in Magrahat 2 block tested positive for the virus.
According to Diamond Harbour health district officials, both had visited the outpatient department at Magrahat Rural Hospital last week with symptoms including fever, cold, and cough. Their samples, tested at Diamond Harbour Medical College and Hospital, confirmed the infection. Neither required hospitalisation and both are currently recovering at home under medical supervision.
Meanwhile, a pregnant woman testing positive for Covid-19 has been admitted to a nursing home in Kolkata’s Kankurgachi area, reported The Indian Express.
In another case, a 15-year-old boy from Rishra was admitted to a private hospital near EM Bypass on Saturday. He had high fever, cough, severe dehydration, vomiting, and diarrhoea. Initially treated by a local physician, his condition necessitated hospital admission after symptoms worsened. He is now receiving care in an isolated cabin, although no respiratory complications have been reported.
The health department has urged local officials to remain vigilant and monitor anyone exhibiting similar symptoms in affected areas.
