The Andhra Pradesh government has cleared the way for Ayurvedic doctors with specialised postgraduate surgical training to carry out operations on their own, marking a significant shift in the state’s healthcare policy.

The move, approved by health minister Satya Kumar Yadav, brings the state in line with central regulations framed in 2020 to integrate traditional systems of medicine with modern medical practice, The Hindu reported.

A press note issued by the health department on Tuesday, December 23, said the decision is aimed at strengthening the role of Indian systems of medicine in mainstream healthcare.

It added that the Minister’s approval follows the Indian Medicine Central Council (Post Graduate Ayurveda Education) Amendment Regulations, 2020, and the guidelines issued by the National Commission for Indian Systems of Medicine.

These regulations were framed after the Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM), under the Ministry of AYUSH, amended the Indian Medicine Central Council (PG Ayurveda Education) Regulations, 2016, in November 2020.

The amendment identified 58 surgical procedures in which postgraduate students of Ayurveda in the Shalya and Shalakya branches must receive formal training and which they are permitted to practice independently after completing their courses.

The move has long been controversial. The Indian Medical Association, the country’s largest body of medical doctors, had opposed the amendment, describing it as an effort to create a new and illegitimate ‘mixopathy’ and also terming the CCIM’s approach “uncivil” and “foul”.

As part of the new policy, the Andhra Pradesh government also plans to start relevant postgraduate courses at the Vijayawada Ayurvedic College and to ensure that adequate infrastructure, including operation theatres and equipment, is put in place to maintain the quality of training.

In the press release, Minister Yadav said that he had held discussions with AYUSH department director K. Dinesh Kumar before taking the decision.

The development comes under the Telugu Desam Party-led government in Andhra Pradesh, which is in alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party — a party that has consistently promoted Ayurveda as a key model of medical treatment.
