A delegation of Rajasthan Dalit Shoshan Mukti Manch (DSMM) on Thursday, met the district magistrate (DM) of Jodhpur, demanding an enquiry into the murder of a Dalit man in the state's Jhunjhunu district.
In a shocking incident, a Dalit man, Rameshwar Valmiki was beaten to death by liquor mafia after being tied upside down in Balonda village under Surajgarh police station.
A purported video of the incident has surfaced on the internet causing an uproar among people. Police have arrested five people in the case including a history sheeter.
DSMM State Coordinator Kishan Meghwal said, “Such incidents are a disgrace to the civilized society. It is necessary that such incidents should be taken seriously and the anti-social elements, especially the growing liquor mafia, should be dealt strictly so that such incidents do not happen in future.”
The delegation submitted a memorandum to the DM, which had the demands of one crore rupees compensation to the family of the deceased and to adopt a concrete strategy to punish those involved in the murder by taking strictest legal action.
The delegation included people associated with many social movements including Deshraj Kalla, Kamlesh Rathod, P.R. Meghwal, Mahipal Singh, Om Praka Bhil Rakesh, Bhanwarlal Parmar, Mahadev, Vishal Barasa, Surendra Singh Chhawani, Jagdish Malviya among others.
The murder of the Dalit man has sparked a political controversy in the state. Former Chief Minister and Congress veteran Ashok Gehlot had attacked the ruling BJP government in Rajasthan over the incident.
In a post on X, Gehlot wrote, “The murder of a Dalit youth by the liquor mafia in Surajgarh, Jhunjhunu and making a video of it viral is a symbol of the weakening credibility of the government and police in Rajasthan. Such incidents are coming to light from all over the state every day. After the BJP government came to power in the state, crimes against Dalits have increased rapidly. The Rajasthan government, which is busy in image making in the media, should take these incidents seriously and work to prevent their recurrence in the future”.
A group of people, forcefully took Rameshwar Valmiki to a secluded place while he was returning home and attacked him, according to the police. He was hung upside down and brutally beaten up.
The police said that the accused left the dead body of deceased Rameshwar Valmiki outside his house. Following the report of the deceased's brother, a case was registered against five named accused and others. The incident is believed to have taken place on May 16.
