Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday (September 4), launched his party’s election campaign in Jammu and Kashmir and stated that the Congress, in collaboration with its INDIA Bloc partners, will strive to restore statehood to the Union Territory.
Gandhi emphasized that the Congress party’s primary objective is to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. He asserted that they had hoped for statehood to be reinstated before the assembly elections, but the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) preferred to hold the elections first.
While addressing a campaign rally in Sangaldan, located in the Banihal Assembly constituency of Ramban district, Gandhi said, “We will ensure return of statehood to the region, whether BJP wants it or not. We will pressurise the government under the banner of INDIA alliance to ensure restoration of statehood,” The Indian Express reported.
Gandhi also criticized the central government, referring to the Lieutenant-Governor of Jammu and Kashmir as a "raja" (king). He accused the central authorities of diverting benefits meant for the people of J&K to outsiders.
“Today, a king sits in Jammu and Kashmir. His name is L-G, but he acts like a king,” Gandhi said.
“Your wealth is being taken away and given to people from outside. All benefits are being directed to outsiders,” he added.
The Congress party is entering the elections in alliance with the Farooq Abdullah-led National Conference. The two parties have agreed to contest a total of 83 seats together, with the National Conference fielding candidates in 51 constituencies and the Congress competing in 32.
