In a dramatic pre-dawn operation on Tuesday (November 26), Patiala Police moved 70-year-old Jagjit Singh Dallewal, coordinator of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (non-political), to a hospital in Ludhiana.
The action occurred mere hours before Dallewal was set to begin a fast-unto-death protest at the Khanauri border in Punjab's Sangrur district, demanding the implementation of a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP).
Dallewal, who had announced his hunger strike earlier this month to coincide with the fourth anniversary of the farmers' protest against the now-repealed farm laws, was forcibly removed from his temporary shelter, The Indian Express reported.
According to Amrik Singh of the Bharti Kisan Union (Sidhupur), the police arrived at the protest site at around 2:30 am.
““The cops came to the Khanauri border at 2.30 am and they broke the fibreglass wall of the temporary room in which Dallewalji was sleeping and took him to an undisclosed location.,” Singh told the newspaper.
The operation involved over 250 personnel who locked other farmers in their huts and held those sleeping in trollies to prevent interference.
However, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dr. Nanak Singh has denied allegations of detention, stating that Dallewal was admitted to Ludhiana's Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) due to health concerns.
The incident has triggered widespread anger among farmer unions. BKU Sidhupur and SKM (non-political) have urged supporters to gather in large numbers at the Khanauri border. Meanwhile, SKM announced "Chetavni" rallies in over 500 districts alongside central trade unions and a march toward Delhi from the Shambhu border on December 6.
