A massive protest led by CPI(M)-affiliated teachers and student organizations erupted outside the School Service Commission (SSC) office on Thursday (April 17), demanding an end to corruption in recruitment and pressing for the immediate publication of a transparent merit list of qualified candidates.
The agitation, spearheaded by the All Bengal Teachers' Association (ABTA), saw participation from the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), both student and youth wings of the CPI(M).
The protest march began at Karunamoyee in Bidhannagar and escalated into tension as demonstrators broke through police barricades en route to the SSC office.

Later, a 10-member delegation comprising representatives from teachers, students, and youth groups met with officials at the commission to submit a charter of demands.
Speaking at the site, ABTA State Secretary Sukumar Pyne criticized the functioning of the SSC, saying, “SSC is supposed to be an autonomous body. But under the Trinamool Congress government, it has become a hub of corruption. During the Left Front rule in 1998, over one lakh appointments were made without a single protest outside the SSC office. Today, candidates are forced to take to the streets.”
DYFI State Secretary Minakshi Mukherjee echoed his sentiments, expressing scepticism over the commission's future steps.
“They promised to conduct exams and prepare a panel. But we fear this will lead to yet another white paper and another round of bribes. The chairman could not even assure us that corruption will not recur—he remained silent,” she said.
SFI State Secretary Debanjan De and All India General Secretaryt Mayukh Biswas also participated in the protest, underlining the Left’s resolve to continue the fight until the recruitment process is free of irregularities.
Meanwhile, in a separate development, the BJP’s youth wing, Yuva Morcha, also staged a demonstration in Kolkata. The protest came in the wake of the Enforcement Directorate filing a chargesheet against Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald case.
The march, which started from Mudiali bus stand and proceeded to Deshapriya Park, was led by Yuva Morcha President Indranil Khan and BJP South Kolkata District President Anupam Bhattacharya.
