CPI(M) Presses PHED to End Water Crisis in Haryana’s Bhiwani Within 3 Days

CPI(M) activists protest in Bhiwani.

The Left parties, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPI(M), Communist Party of India (CPI) along with Left-leaning mass organisations on Friday (May 29), staged a protest demonstration in front of Public Health Engineering Department’s (PHED) office in Haryana’s Bhiwani, against the acute shortage of drinking water plaguing the town.

Reportedly, the residents of Bhiwani are reeling under an acute shortage of drinking water supply and irregular power cuts recently. A number of Municipal Council members have expressed their resentment against the PHED over the acute shortage of water supply in various localities of the town.

The paucity of electricity, amid the scorching heat, have made life miserable for residents, as they cannot run fans, coolers and ACs to beat the heat.

Acute shortage of water supply had compelled many residents of the town to use the groundwater for drinking purposes. However, many residents complained that the groundwater is not fit for consumption and it could result in the spread of cholera and skin allergies.

For about a month, many wards of the town had witnessed sporadic protests by the local residents led by CPI(M) against the PHED officials.

On Friday, during the Left’s protest, the PHED superintendent Engineer, Krishna Kumar Gill interacted with demonstrators for an hour regarding city's water crisis and instructed his executive engineer Surya Kant to make all efforts to resolve the existing crisis.

Gill said that he would direct his department colleagues, SDO and other concerned staffs to take up phone calls to hear the public complaints. He assured the protestors that water tankers would be sent to crisis inflected areas on urgent basis.

The Left parties gave an ultimatum of three days to the top officials of the PHED to resolve the issues. The protesters informed that if the water woes are not dealt with, in the stipulated time frame, they would hit the streets and forge a bigger and continued protest against the Bharatiya Janta Party led state government till the matter is resolved.
