In Patna on Tuesday (December 31), the Congress and the Left party legislators, along with MPs, marched in solidarity with protesting students over the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) paper leak controversy.
The march, which began at the Legislative Assembly, aimed to reach the Raj Bhavan and demand the cancellation of the BPSC exam, as well as action against the police baton charge on students during earlier protests.
Carrying banners and posters, the protesters faced repeated barricading by the Patna administration. Despite these obstacles, they pressed on, symbolically sitting on the road when police initially stopped them near the Raj Bhavan.
The legislators challenged the police to cite rules preventing them from meeting the Governor. After some delay and minor scuffles, the leaders were permitted to proceed.
Notable leaders in the march included CPI(ML) MLA leaders Mehboob Alam, Satyadev Ram, Congress MLA Shakeel Ahmed, CPI(M)’s Ajay Kumar, CPI’s Ramratan Singh, and others.
Participants also included Congress MLAs Sameer Mahaseth, Pratima Das, and Shashi Yadav, as well as CPI(M) MLA Satyendra Yadav and CPI's Suryakant Paswan.
CPI(ML)'s Paliganj MLA Sandeep Saurabh notably pushed through a barricaded gate near the Assembly, enabling protesters to move forward. Police attempts to seize banners and stop the march led to minor incidents, including Ara MP Sudama Prasad suffering a slight leg injury during a scuffle.
Despite being stopped at multiple points, including Echo Park, the MLAs overcame barricades to reach the Raj Bhavan.
A delegation of legislators ultimately met with the Governor to present their demands. These included a transparent and fair investigation into the BPSC paper leak, strict action against culpable officials, and reforms to ensure an impartial examination process.
Meanwhile, on Monday, youth and student wings of Left parties, led by the All India Students Association (AISA) and the Revolutionary Youth Association (RYA), had organized a statewide ‘chakka jam’ in protest.
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary reportedly held discussions on the issue.
The Deputy Chief Minister later stated that while BPSC is an autonomous body, it must independently decide on the matter. He criticized past governments for interfering in BPSC’s functioning and emphasized that such interference should no longer occur.
