Residents of Mohanpur village in Jharkhand’s Singhbhum Lok Sabha on Sunday (April 14) came out to protest against BJP candidate, Geeta Koda, while she was on her campaign trail.

Geeta Koda, a sitting MP from the same constituency on Congress ticket, made a switch to BJP on 26 February. The villagers allege that the MP had not visited her constituency in the past five years, leave alone doing any welfare work in the area.

The villagers blocked Koda when she arrived in Mohanpur in Gamharia block of Seraikela-Kharsawan district. The protesters were armed with traditional weapons. The protesters have given a directive to Koda that she needs to have the permission for entry into the area from gram panchayat.

The development caused the police and civil administration officials to rush to the site of protest and ensure that no violence errupted at the site.

Seraikela-Kharsawan SP Manish Toppo told The Times of India, “Preliminary investigation has revealed that the villagers’ protest against the MP resulted in the altercation. We are probing the issue but there is no report of violence at the site.”

BJP leaders alleged that the protesters were Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) supporters and workers. State BJP President Babulal Marandi
said that JMM supporters, in despair after seeing certain defeat in the general elections, tried to harm Geeta Koda and her supporters.

Voting for Singhbhum (ST) Lok Sabha seat is scheduled on May 13.
