Thirteen students, including three women, from Banaras Hindu University (BHU) have been arrested by Varanasi police for allegedly assaulting university security guards who tried to stop them from burning a copy of the Manusmriti.
Two female security guards were injured in the incident and are currently receiving treatment at a hospital, according to police officials.
Based on the complaint filed, an FIR was registered at the Lanka police station under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code, including Section 32 (Assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from duty), Section 121 (Voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from duty), Section 196 (Promoting enmity between groups based on religion, race, or other factors), Section 299 (Deliberate acts to outrage religious feelings), Section 190 (Guilt of unlawful assembly), Section 191 (Rioting), Section 115 (Voluntarily causing hurt), and Section 110 (Attempt to commit culpable homicide).
The incident occurred on December 25, when the BHU chief security officer informed the police that a group of students had gathered at the arts faculty intersection on campus.
According the police, the students attempted to burn the Manusmriti as part of a “planned effort to incite religious discord and create a disturbance,” The Indian Express reported.
When security guards intervened to prevent the act, the students allegedly attacked them, vandalized property, and obstructed their official duties.
