The participation of key farmer unions—Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), SKM (Non-Political), and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM)—in the fourth round of Ekta (unity) talks scheduled for Thursday (February 27) in Chandigarh remains uncertain due to the deteriorating health of farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal.

Dallewal, who has been on a fast-unto-death for 93 consecutive days, developed a high fever of 103.6°F on Wednesday morning, The Indian Express reported.

His health has worsened since Tuesday, with medical reports indicating elevated uric acid levels and deteriorating kidney function, according to SKM (Non-Political) spokesperson Abhimanyu Kohar. A team of doctors is closely monitoring his condition.

Dallewal’s hunger strike is part of an ongoing agitation by farmer organizations demanding a legally guaranteed minimum support price (MSP) for all crops. Farmer leaders have reiterated that their struggle will continue until the government fulfills their demands.

Since November 2024, SKM, SKM (Non-Political), and KMM have been holding discussions on a united front, but a consensus is yet to be reached.

During the last Ekta meeting on February 12 at Chandigarh’s Kisan Bhavan, SKM and KMM leaders aligned on key issues, but SKM (Non-Political) representatives were absent due to a mahapanchayat at the Khanauri border.

The upcoming meeting was expected to finalize joint protest strategies, but with Dallewal’s worsening condition, uncertainty looms over the proceedings.

Meanwhile, in observance of International Women’s Day on March 8, women farmers will lead mahapanchayats at protest sites in Shambhu, Ratanpura, and Datasinghwala-Khanauri, with a continued focus on the MSP demand, SKM (Non-Political) and KMM leaders announced on Wednesday.
