Jagjit Singh Dallewal, a 70-year-old farmer leader, has been on a fast-unto-death for 27 days at the Khanauri border between Punjab and Haryana, demanding a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP) on crops.
As his hunger strike continues, doctors have declared his health condition “critical,” warning of risks including cardiac arrest and multi-organ failure, news agency PTI reported.
Doctors from the 5 Rivers Heart Association, an NGO attending to Dallewal, reported significant deterioration in his health.
“His hands and feet were cold. Starvation is adversely affecting his nervous system, and vital organs like liver and kidneys. His reflexes are very slow. His blood pressure is also fluctuating, sometimes dropping sharply, which is a matter of concern,” the news agency quoted a doctor as saying.
The doctor indicated that the farmer leader urgently requires ICU admission as he is at high risk of cardiac arrest.
“He is hemodynamically unstable (unstable movement of blood that results in inadequate blood flow). Generally, such patients require admission to ICU. He is at risk of cardiac arrest and his condition is critical,” the doctor added.
Due to his fragile state, Dallewal refrained from appearing on stage on Sunday (December 21), as advised by his medical team.
A statement from the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha highlighted his weakened immunity, leaving him highly vulnerable to infections.
Former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi visited Dallewal on Saturday evening, conveying the concerns of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi regarding his health.
Channi praised Dallewal’s selfless efforts, urging the central government to heed the suggestions of the parliamentary standing committee on agriculture and pass a law guaranteeing MSP for farmers.
To support Dallewal’s cause, farmers’ organizations announced nationwide candlelight marches on December 24 at 5:30 PM.
On December 26, marking one month of his hunger strike, symbolic hunger strikes will be observed at tehsil and district levels across the country from 10 AM to 4 PM.
Farmers have been protesting at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points since February 13 after their march to Delhi was blocked by security forces. A group of 101 farmers made three attempts to enter Delhi on foot between December 6 and 14 but were stopped by authorities in Haryana.
