The Kerala government on Tuesday (June 18) decided to continue teaching the sections on the Babri Masjid demolition that have been scraped from the revised National Council of Educational Research and Training’s (NCERT) political science textbook, Manorama reported.
Kerala’s education minister, V Sivankutty said the decision whether a new textbook will be brought in or the Babri Masjid portions be included in the supplementary textbook lay upon the curriculum committee.
Sivankutty said, “Textbooks should not comprise narrow ideological positions or propaganda of any movement. Actual history and science should be taught to students.” quoted PTI.
Sivankutty said that the state does not approve fabrication and omissions of different chapters of country’s history out of sheer political interest. He also stated that the Kerala government stands by the position that historical facts should be taught to children, reported Manorama.
The education minister said that in the past, Kerala government had introduced parallel textbooks in the state curriculum which feature Mughal history and the infamous Gujarat riots of 2002, that were omitted from NCERT textbooks.
The revised NCERT Class 12 Political Science textbook, now available in the market, has replaced Babri Masjid’s name by a “three-dome structure, along with numerous omissions and alterations.
The revised textbook has also trimmed down the Ayodhya section from four to two pages, deleting multiple references of the Babri Masjid demolition.
In the trimmed version of the Ayodhya episode, some important details are deleted. This includes L K Advani-led BJP’s Rath Yatra for garnering support for the Ram Janmabhoomi movement, Kar Sevaks’ demolition of the Babri Masjid, communal riots across India that followed the demolition act, President’s rule imposed in BJP-ruled states and others important occurrences.
The new altered textbook even boosts of a new version of Ayodhya’s history. The revised textbook claims that the “three-dome structure”, built at the site of Lord Ram’s birthplace, had “visible displays of Hindu symbols and relics in its interior as well as its exterior portions”. The previous version of the book said that the Babri Masjid was built by Mir Baqi in the 16th century.
