Sikkim University has announced the implementation of one-day menstrual leave per month for its female students.
The decision was formalized through a notification issued by Registrar Laxuman Sharma on December 4, following a proposal by the Sikkim University Students’ Association (SUSA) last month, reported news agency PTI.
“The Vice-Chancellor has been pleased to allow one-day menstrual leave in a month for girl/women student of Sikkim University except during university examinations,” the notification stated.
To ensure compliance with academic requirements, the leave will be adjusted against the mandatory 75% attendance criteria needed for eligibility to appear in semester examinations, the notification clarified.
This step is seen as a progressive measure addressing the needs of women students and responding to student-led advocacy for more inclusive policies.
