The mother of Nirbhaya, the victim of the 2012 Delhi gang rape case, has called for the resignation of West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee. She accused Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo of failing to effectively address the situation following widespread protests against the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata.

Asha Devi, while speaking to news agency PTI, criticized Banerjee for "attempting to divert people's attention" by organizing protests.

"Mamata Banerjee is protesting to divert people's attention from this issue. She herself is a woman. She should have taken strict action against the culprits while discharging her responsibility as the head of the state. She should resign because she has failed to handle the situation," she said.

"Instead of using her authority to take action against the culprits, Mamata Banerjee is trying to mislead the public." PTI quoted Asha Devi as saying.

"When girls are not safe in Kolkata's medical college and such barbarity is committed against them, then one can understand the state of women's safety in the country," she told PTI.

On August 9, the deceased, a postgraduate trainee in the chest medicine department, was found dead in the seminar hall of the hospital's Emergency building. Her family had alleged that she was raped and murdered. Kolkata has witnessed significant backlash and protests since the incident.
