Senior BJP leader and Madhya Pradesh cabinet minister Kailash Vijayvargiya has stirred controversy with his comments on women’s clothing, made during a World Environment Day event in Indore on Thursday (June 5).

The minister, while praising a short speech delivered by BJP local unit president Sumit Mishra, disapproved of what he described as a growing trend of women wearing “skimpy clothes,” calling it inconsistent with Indian cultural values.

Referring to a Western proverb that compares brief speeches to short clothing, Vijayvargiya said, “Look, there is a western saying which is not good, but this saying is discussed a lot in foreign countries… It is said there (abroad) that just as a girl wearing less clothes is beautiful, similarly a leader giving a short speech is also very good. There is such a saying in foreign countries, but I do not follow it,” news agency PTI reported.

His remarks, which were met with laughter and applause from the audience, quickly went viral after a video of the speech surfaced on social media.

Expanding on his viewpoint, the minister said, “If a girl here (in India) wears good and pretty clothes, does good makeup and wears nice jewellery, then people consider her very beautiful. But abroad, if a (woman) wears less clothes, then it is considered good. Now, this is their (foreigners) thinking.”

He went on to say that he personally disapproves of women wearing less clothing, describing it as a concept of beauty rooted in foreign thinking rather than Indian tradition.

Vijayvargiya further shared an anecdote, saying, “I do not like (women) wearing less clothes. Many a time, girls come to take selfies with me, then I tell them that they come by wearing good clothes. Then get a selfie clicked with me.”

The comments have sparked criticism from various quarters, with many calling the remarks regressive and intrusive.

Several BJP leaders and local public representatives were present at the event when Vijayvargiya made the statements.

As the video continues to circulate widely, it has reignited debate over the role of politicians in commenting on personal choices related to women’s attire.
