In the clip, Bidhuri could be heard saying, "I promise you that I will build each build road of Kalkaji" smooth "like the cheeks of Priyanka Gandhi."
The BJP has fielded Bidhuri to contest from Kalkaji in the upcoming Delhi Assembly Elections 2025, where he will face Delhi Chief Minister and AAP leader Atishi.
Bidhuri’s remarks have fuelled a political firestorm, with leaders from Congress and AAP strongly condemning the BJP candidate's language.
Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate called the comments "shameful" and accused the BJP of perpetuating an "anti-women mindset."
“The BJP is practically anti-women and repeatedly provides evidence of this. Former BJP MP and the party’s candidate for the Kalkaji Assembly constituency, Ramesh Bidhuri, made a statement regarding Priyanka Gandhi that is not only shameful but also reveals his disgusting mentality towards women. But what else can be expected from a man who used foul language against his fellow MP in the House and faced no punishment? This is the true face of the BJP,” Shrinate said in a statement on X.

AAP MP Sanjay Singh also slammed Bidhuri on X. Singh questioned the top Congress leadership in Delhi for not condemning Bidhuri's sexist remark on Gandhi.
"Ramesh Bidhuri spoke very poorly about Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Ji, but Sandeep Dikshit and Ajay Maken do not have the courage to say even a single word against him. This clearly shows how deep the relationship is between Sandeep Dikshit, Ajay Maken, and the BJP," Singh wrote.

Amid the uproar, Bidhuri defended his remarks, arguing that they were no different from comments made by opposition leaders in the past.
Drawing a comparison, Bidhuri referenced a statement by former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, who once famously claimed he would make Bihar’s roads as smooth as actor Hema Malini’s cheeks.
“Congress should rectify first, then we will also rectify. BJP doesn't make false promises,” PTI quoted Bidhuri as saying.
"Congress should clear, Lalu ji was in his cabinet, they should have made him apologise, they did not ask for it because she was from a simple family,” he added.
Bidhuri later posted a statement on X, expressing “regret” over the controversy.
“Some people are making statements on social media for political gain, misinterpreting a statement I made in a specific context. My intention was never to insult anyone. However, if anyone has been hurt by my words, I sincerely express my regret,” he wrote.
@JPNadda @Virend_Sachdeva @PandaJay @ANI…

This is not the first time Bidhuri has sparked outrage. In 2023, he was criticized for using Islamophobic slurs against then-BSP MP Kunwar Danish Ali during a parliamentary session.
Despite widespread condemnation, the BJP took no significant disciplinary action, leading opposition parties to accuse the ruling party of condoning such behaviour.
The Kalkaji controversy has further escalated tensions ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections, with Congress leader Alka Lamba announcing plans to file a formal FIR against Bidhuri for his remarks.
Meanwhile, the incident has reignited debates about political decorum and respect for women in public discourse.
