Farmers under the banner of Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) and BKU (Ekta Ugrahan) staged protest demonstrations during ‘booth sammelan’ programmes of the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) in Patiala district’s Samana town, Dhudike village of Moga and Malerkotla town. These incidents once again, pointed out the ongoing discontent among the farming community with the BJP.
The protesters showed black flags to various BJP leaders who were attending ‘booth sammelan’ in light of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, before being detained by the police. The agitating farmers said that the protests were done to ask BJP leaders questions related to farming issues.
Malerkotla district president of BKU Ekta Ugrahan union, Kulwinder Singh Kinda, while speaking to Times of India said, “We had planned to show black flags to BJP leader Arvind Khanna and ask him questions about atrocities being done by BJP on farmers; however, the police lathi-charged all of us.”

According to a report in TOI, in Dhudike, the police detained 19 farmers, who demonstrated against BJP’s Faridkot candidate, Hans Raj Hans, while in Malerkotla 40 farmer activists were detained for agitating against BJP leader Arvind Khanna.
In Samana, the activists exhibited their dissent by displaying black flags to BJP against BJP candidate from Patiala and wife of former Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh, Preneet Kaur. This is the second time over the past few days that Kaur faced the farmers’ ire. Last Sunday too, she had faced a similar protest in Patran.
The farmers raised slogans against BJP leaders. There were reports of minor clashes between the farmers and the police personnel. Police had taken some of the protesting farmers into preventive custody.
Following detention, larger group of farmers assembled outside the police stations demanding the release of their peers. The farmers were later released from custody in all the places.
