The Ministry of Education has unveiled the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024 rankings, highlighting India's top-performing universities. Announced on August 12, 2024, the rankings reveal that the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru has earned the top spot as the leading university in the country.
Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), both in New Delhi follow in second and third place, maintaining their positions from the previous year.
This year’s rankings feature a notable change in the fourth position, with Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal, surpassing Jadavpur University. Banaras Hindu University (BHU) Varanasi has secured the fifth position, and Delhi University has made a remarkable advancement, climbing from 11th to 6th place.
Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham maintained its seventh position, while Aligarh Muslim University advanced from ninth to eighth place. Jadavpur University fell from fourth to ninth, and Vellore Institute of Technology dropped from eighth to tenth.
Three private universities—Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, and Vellore Institute of Technology—have made notable appearances in the top ten list, highlighting their academic excellence.
Both JNU and JMI are recognized for their commitment to free speech, humanitarian values, and inclusive thinking. JNU, with its Leftist and progressive stance, has faced criticism for alleged “anti-national” activities, notably during the 2016 controversy involving sedition charges against students and faculty. This incident sparked a nationwide debate on free speech and nationalism.
Similarly, JMI has faced scrutiny for its perceived “Islamic” leanings. During the 2019 anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests, the university was criticized with accusations of “Islamic terrorism” and “anti-national” activities. Despite facing illegitimate abuse and challenges from right-wing ecosystem, both JNU and JMI continue to excel academically while steadfastly upholding their core values.
The NIRF 2024 rankings remain a key benchmark for educational excellence in India, offering valuable insights into the performance of higher education institutions for students, educators, and policymakers. With IISc Bengaluru maintaining its top position and the addition of new categories, the rankings reflect the evolving landscape of Indian higher education.
