A recent video of IIT Madras director V. Kamakoti praising the medicinal benefits of cow urine has sparked strong criticism from rationalist groups and political leaders.

Speaking at a ‘Go Samrakshana Sala’ event in Chennai on January 15, coinciding with the Tamil festival of Maatu Pongal that celebrates cattle, Kamakoti shared an anecdote about a prominent sanyasi treating a fever with gomutra (cow urine).

“A prominent sanyasi developed a fever. The idea of calling a doctor was suggested to him… I forgot the name of that sanyasi. He immediately said he would drink gomutra. Gomutra was immediately brought, and he consumed it with much ease. The fever seemed to have disappeared in 15 minutes. So, for antibacterial, antifungal, digestive issues, and irritable bowel syndrome – for many such issues – gomutra is a very important medicine,” he stated, as reported by The Indian Express.

The remarks have drawn sharp responses. Congress MP Karti Chidambaram criticized the statement on X (formerly Twitter), calling it “peddling pseudoscience” and “unbecoming of the director of IIT Madras.”

The Dravidar Kazhagam, a rationalist organization founded by social reformer Periyar, accused Kamakoti of promoting “unscientific ideas.”

The group demanded that he provide scientific evidence for his claims or face protests.

During the event, Kamakoti also expressed concern over the declining population of indigenous cow breeds, emphasizing the need for technological interventions to prevent their extinction.
