A fresh political row has erupted in Delhi after CPI(M) leaders alleged that police personnel entered the party headquarters, AKG Bhavan, on Tuesday (July 28) in an attempt to detain Students’ Federation of India (SFI) leader Aishe Ghosh, despite assurances from the Union government that students involved in recent protests would not be targeted.
A video shared on the CPI(M) Central Committee’s X account purportedly shows police personnel inside the party office looking for Ghosh. The officers were reportedly stopped and questioned by CPI(M) Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas, following which they left the premises without taking the student leader into custody.
According to the CPI(M), the police personnel had entered the party headquarters in plain clothes. Brittas reportedly asked them to return in uniform, alleging that those who entered the premises were not wearing uniforms or identity name badges.
Brittas further alleged that the Delhi Police was attempting to target Ghosh by reviving an earlier case against her, despite the Union government's assurance that charges related to the recent student movement against former Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan would be dropped.
Ghosh is currently the national Joint Secretary of the Students Federation of India (SFI) and previously served as president of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students’ union. She had participated in a hunger strike at Jantar Mantar alongside activists from the SFI, AISA and AISF in support of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk.
She is also pursuing a public interest litigation before the Delhi High Court challenging what she has described as “indiscriminate and intrusive surveillance” of protesters at Jantar Mantar.
The alleged police action has drawn strong condemnation from the CPI(M) leadership. Party General Secretary MA Baby described what he called a witch hunt against protesting students as deplorable and said the party would oppose such actions.
“The manner in which Narendra Modi, Amit Shah and Mohan Bhagwat are running the affairs of our country is strange. They think they can do anything... They wanted to persecute Aishi Ghosh by digging up some so-called old, old case. One woman who claimed to be a police woman, but she doesn't have any official clothes, no name board, along with two other police people. They wanted to quietly kidnap,” Baby told news agency PTI.
The incident has intensified the confrontation between the CPI(M) and the Delhi Police over the treatment of student protesters.
The party has questioned the timing of the alleged police visit to its headquarters and is demanding accountability, while the controversy comes against the backdrop of assurances that participants in the recent student agitation would not face retaliatory action.
