A 24-year-old medical aspirant allegedly died by suicide in Dehradun on Tuesday (June 16), with police suspecting that stress related to the upcoming National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) retest may have played a role in the incident.
The deceased, identified as Riya Kumari, had been preparing for the examination scheduled for June 21. She was pursuing her studies at a college in Dehradun while simultaneously preparing for the medical entrance examination. Her father is a retired Army personnel, The Indian Express reported.
According to police, the incident came to light on Tuesday morning when Kumari’s mother noticed that her room in the family's residence in Patel Nagar was locked from inside. After informing her husband, the couple forced open the door and found their daughter dead. Police were alerted at around 11.30 am.
During the investigation, officers recovered a suicide note from the scene. Circle Officer (Sadar) Ankit Kandari said the note contained an apology from the young woman.
“I love you, Papa; I am sorry. This is not due to anyone’s fault; this is due to my incompetence,” Kandari quoted the letter as saying, the paper reported.
The family declined to have a postmortem conducted and the cremation was carried out later on Tuesday. However, police said they would continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding her mental state.
“We will probe that she was being pressured and was in distress over it,” said Kandari.
Jaiveer Singh, in charge of the local police post, said Kumari had been preparing for several competitive examinations and often spent long hours studying in her room. Her parents became concerned when she failed to come out for breakfast on Tuesday morning.
Family members told the police that they had last seen her the previous night while she was studying. Authorities are continuing their inquiry into the case.
If you or someone you know is struggling emotionally or having thoughts of self-harm, reaching out to a trusted person, a mental health professional, or a local crisis helpline can help. Support is available, and seeking assistance is an important step.
