A Dalit man in Maharashtra’s Jalna has alleged that he was assaulted, subjected to casteist abuse and forcibly made to eat cow dung by a group of self-styled cow vigilantes who accused him of planning to sell a bull to a Muslim butcher.
The incident allegedly took place in May, but came to light after a purported video began circulating on social media. The victim, Parameshwar Suhas Hiwale, subsequently approached the police, following which a case was registered against six identified persons, news agency PTI reported.
According to Hiwale’s complaint, he had purchased a bull at a weekly cattle market in Deulgaon Raja on May 23 and was travelling back to Jalna with his 11-year-old son and an acquaintance, Narayan Maroti Kamble.
Their vehicle was allegedly intercepted in the Kanhaiyanagar area by a group claiming to be members of the Bajrang Dal and cow protectors. The group accused Hiwale of intending to sell the animal to a Muslim butcher.
Hiwale told the police that he denied the allegation and showed the group documents relating to his purchase of the bull. However, he alleged that the men then assaulted him and asked about his name and caste.
According to his complaint, the accused allegedly slapped him, hurled caste-related abuse and forcibly stuffed cow dung into his mouth.
Hiwale further alleged that the group attempted to force cow dung into the mouth of his 11-year-old son as well, but the child resisted. Kamble, who was travelling with them, was also allegedly abused and assaulted, while their vehicle was damaged.
The victim also alleged that one of the accused recorded the incident on a mobile phone and threatened him and his family with serious consequences if they approached the police.
The alleged incident remained unreported to the police for months. Hiwale approached the Jalna Tehsil police station on August 21 after learning that a video purportedly showing the incident was being circulated on Instagram.
Police have now registered a case against six identified persons under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Sections 126(2) relating to wrongful restraint, 115(2) concerning voluntarily causing hurt and 189(2) dealing with unlawful assembly. Provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act have also been invoked.
Police inspector Santosh Sable said the case had been registered and an investigation was underway. Additional Superintendent of Police Vikram Sali told PTI that a sub-divisional police officer was conducting the probe.
No arrests had been made at the time of the latest update. The case has drawn attention to the allegations of violence and caste-based abuse made by Hiwale against the self-proclaimed cow vigilantes, as investigators examine the purported video and other evidence related to the incident.
