On Monday (January 13), a protest was organized at Buddha Murti Chowk in Kadamkuan, Patna, against the displacement of hundreds of Manjhi families who had been living in the area for more than three decades.

The protest, led by members of the victimized Manjhi community and supported by leaders like Phulwari MLA Gopal Ravidas, MLC Shashi Yadav, and leaders from the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) [CPI(ML)] such as Ranvijay Kumar, Sanjay Kumar, Vinay Kumar, and Puneet Pathak, demanded justice for the displaced families.

Addressing the gathering, MLA Gopal Ravidas and MLC Shashi Yadav accused the BJP-JD(U) government, particularly Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sinha and City Development Minister Nitin Naveen, of orchestrating the destruction of these homes under the pretext of urban development.

The leaders alleged that the installation of a permanent iron gate in the service lane by the Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) was inhumane and targeted at displacing poor families belonging to Mahadalit and Dalit communities.

The protestors called for the immediate removal of the PMC Commissioner, accusing them of working at the behest of BJP ministers to demolish the homes of the poor. They vowed to oust the BJP-Nitish government in the 2025 elections for its failure to provide housing to the underprivileged.

The leaders strongly criticized the government’s “Smart City” initiative, claiming it prioritized the interests of JDU-BJP leaders, builders, and mafias over the welfare of marginalized communities.

They stated that the double-engine BJP-Nitish government had failed to deliver affordable housing or land to landless families and instead displaced thousands in Patna and other cities.

Leaders at the protest announced plans for a prolonged struggle to secure housing for the displaced Manjhi families. They demanded the allocation of unused government land to settle these families, who had been living near the Buddha statue sidewalk and service lane for decades.

The protest also highlighted allegations that BJP leaders, including Vijay Sinha, were constructing properties in the area, further marginalizing the poor.

Victimized families, represented by leaders like Sitbia Devi and Dukhia Devi, shared their anguish and called for justice. They emphasized the need for the government to provide permanent housing solutions and end the targeted eviction of Dalit and Mahadalit families.

The protest concluded with a pledge to intensify agitation until the displaced families are resettled and their rights are secured.
