Police in Uttar Pradesh's Sant Kabir Nagar have arrested three persons in connection with the killing of a 29-year-old Dalit man, an incident that triggered communal tensions and protests in the Bakhira area earlier this week.

Among those arrested is the prime accused, whose house was torched by an enraged crowd following the murder.

“We have arrested all three accused, including Nasir Ali (20) who was named in the FIR. They were produced before the court which sent them to judicial custody,” Uma Shankar, Station House Officer of Bakhira police station told The Indian Express.

The two other accused have been identified as Nirahu (21) and Jaigham (35). According to police, Nasir and Jaigham operate a meat shop in the locality, while Nirahu runs a barber shop.

Investigators said Anand was returning home on Thursday when he was allegedly attacked near the Babhni crossing. The assailants are accused of slitting his throat before fleeing the spot.

Following the murder, family members and residents blocked a road with the victim’s body and staged a protest that continued for several hours. The situation turned tense when a mob set fire to the residence of the main accused, Nasir Ali, prompting senior police and administrative officials to rush to the village.

Authorities held discussions with the victim’s family and local residents, after which the agitation was called off. Officials assured the protesters of a fair probe, swift arrests and stringent legal action against those responsible. The body was subsequently sent for post-mortem examination.

Police said preliminary findings indicate that the killing may have stemmed from a dispute that arose during a local function around 10 days ago.

According to investigators, Anand’s niece had allegedly informed him that Nasir Ali had harassed her during the event.

With all three accused now in judicial custody, police said further investigation is underway to establish the sequence of events and determine the exact circumstances that led to the murder, which had briefly heightened tensions in the area.
