In Rajasthan’s Barmer district, a shocking incident came to light where a Dalit youth, Shrawan Meghwal, was tied upside down to a tree and brutally beaten by a group of locals.
A video of the assault, showing Meghwal crying and pleading for mercy, surfaced on social media and quickly went viral, prompting action by the Barmer police.
The incident occurred on Friday (January 10) in a village where Meghwal was accused of involvement in a bike theft.
According to Mukta Pareek, the Station House Officer (SHO) of Gudamalani, preliminary investigations revealed that Meghwal was blamed for stealing a motorcycle, leading to the violent attack.
A case has been registered against five to six individuals based on Meghwal’s complaint.
As of Saturday, three people had been arrested, The Indian Express reported.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) Sukhram Vishnoi, speaking to The Indian Express, revealed that Meghwal already had cases of motorcycle theft and rape registered against him.
"Kumar already has a motorcycle theft and rape case registered against him. There was a theft that had happened a few days back in Kharwa Gram Panchayat in Gudamalani police station area. People suspected him to be the culprit and so they beat him up," Vishnoi stated.
The police are continuing their investigation into the incident, ensuring that those responsible for the assault are brought to justice.
