In a unique act of digital resistance, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has launched a week-long 'Digital Protest' in solidarity with the people of Palestine, urging citizens across the country to switch off their phones and computers daily from 9 to 9:30 pm.
Beginning tonight, the protest aims to draw attention to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza and to denounce Israel’s military actions in the region.
CPI(M) General Secretary M.A. Baby announced the campaign during a press briefing, describing it as a form of “digital satyagraha” suited to the realities of the modern world.
“This is a peaceful digital fast. No social media, no messages, no online activity,” he said, calling on people to collectively log off in protest against what the party has described as a genocide unfolding in Gaza.
The protest comes amid growing international criticism of Israel’s operations, which have led to thousands of civilian casualties.
Baby cited a recent report by Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on Palestine, which highlighted the involvement of global tech corporations such as Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and IBM in supporting Israeli military infrastructure.
“When technology companies profit from war, our silence online becomes a statement of resistance,” he said.
He also slammed the United States for its continued support of Israel, stating that Washington has failed to intervene meaningfully to stop the bloodshed.
“The U.S. continues to shield Israel diplomatically, while civilians — especially women and children — bear the brunt of its assaults,” Baby said.
The CPI(M)’s digital protest has found resonance online, with the hashtag #SilenceForGaza gaining traction across various platforms. Supporters have pledged to join the daily half-hour digital blackout as an expression of global solidarity and protest against war profiteering.
