The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Saturday (May 31) condemned the government’s recent handling of undocumented Bangladeshi migrants, urging authorities to uphold legal procedures and refrain from using religion as a basis for identifying illegal entrants.

In a sharply worded statement, the CPI(M) Polit Bureau denounced the “inhuman” push-back and deportation of suspected Bangladeshi nationals, calling it a violation of human rights.

“The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) condemns the inhuman ‘push-back’ and deportation of suspected Bangladeshi citizens. The government should deal with those who have entered the country illegally according to the well-laid out procedures,” the party said.

The CPI(M) stressed that all undocumented migrants, regardless of their background, must be given access to a fair legal process.

“Those who have entered the country through illegal means should be allowed access to a fair trial. Poor and undocumented migrants, who enter the country without any mala fide intentions should be treated with dignity and dealt with according to the laid out procedures,” the party added, cautioning against the communalisation of immigration policy.

The statement came amid reports that, following the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Bengali-speaking Muslims were being indiscriminately targeted and deported without verification by both state and central authorities led by the BJP.

The CPI(M) alleged that even Indian citizens, wrongly identified as foreigners, were being forcibly sent to Bangladesh.

“According to reports, some genuine Indian citizens too are arrested and pushed into Bangladesh. Even those citizens who were declared foreign nationals by the Foreigners Tribunals, but whose appeals are still pending before the Assam High Court and the Supreme Court, have been forcibly pushed back. This should not be allowed,” the party said.

The CPI(M) also criticised the Assam government’s move to arm so-called “indigenous people” in select districts, describing it as a “dangerous decision with far-reaching ramifications.”

It warned that such steps were part of the BJP’s broader communal agenda in the state.

“This is a dangerous decision with far reaching ramifications. It is the duty of the government to maintain law and order and also prevent infiltration. Pushing them back and arming communally selected sections of the people are not the solutions,” the statement said.
