CPI(M) State Secretary Mohammad Salim launched a direct attack on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday (December 2), accusing her of misleading the public about the state’s employment numbers and poverty-alleviation claims.

Addressing a press conference at the party’s state headquarters, Salim said, "The Chief Minister is lying."

He argued that despite her assertion of creating two crore jobs, young people from West Bengal continue to migrate to other states for work, where they are often subjected to attacks.

According to him, unemployment protests and the desperation of job-seeking youth contradict the government’s claims. Mamata Banerjee had earlier stated that her administration had generated two crore jobs and lifted over one crore people out of poverty.

Salim demanded that the state government publish a white paper detailing appointments across departments and sectors. Drawing a comparison, he said that during Jyoti Basu’s initial five years as Chief Minister, "the most people in the world came above the poverty line in the shortest time."

He insisted that the current government must explain what measures it has taken to justify its poverty-reduction claims.

Speaking on a series of recruitment scandals, the CPI(M) leader referred to the recent police recruitment exam, where question papers were allegedly sold. He reminded that corruption had earlier plagued the School Service Commission, SSC, and Madrasa Service Commission as well.

Linking these issues to the ongoing ‘Bangla Bachao Yatra’, Salim said, "When we have taken to the streets with the demands of the common people, the Trinamool and BJP are converting Hindus into Muslims."

On the Special Summary Revision (SIR) process, Salim questioned why forms were distributed without first removing the names of deceased individuals. He argued that the Election Commission should have ensured an accurate voter list at the outset.

He alleged that marginalized people were being deprived of their voting rights and added, "Whatever the RSS wants, whatever the BJP wants, the state government is doing in this state."

Salim also criticised the Centre’s Sanchar Sathi app, demanding its withdrawal. He said the Department of Telecommunications’ push for the app violated constitutional protections and amounted to undue interference in citizens’ private lives.
According to him, "The government cannot interfere in the personal affairs of citizens in any way."

He further warned that the state did not have the infrastructure for such surveillance and suggested that foreign agencies might be involved.

Discussing the ongoing Bangla Bachao Yatra, Salim said the march was gaining strong public support. He noted that the yatra would enter Malda district from Dakshin Dinajpur on Tuesday night and continue across different parts of the district over the next three days. He added that he would rejoin the yatra on December 5.
