Shortly after midnight on August 15, vandals broke into Kolkata's R G Kar Medical College and Hospital and damaged the area where protesters had gathered in response to the rape and murder of a junior doctor from the institution. Witnesses reported that the miscreants attacked demonstrators, including doctors, and also vandalized police vehicles.

The vandalism at the state-run medical institution continued for approximately 45 minutes, with no apparent intervention from the Kolkata Police.

The hooligans, disguised as protesters, entered the hospital premises, vandalized property, and threw stones at policemen. They targeted areas of the medical facility where the body of a female doctor was discovered last week.

The mob vandalized the protest stage set up by doctors inside R.G. Kar Hospital. A police vehicle and several two-wheelers at the location were also damaged during the incident.

Late Wednesday night, people from across West Bengal and other parts of the country took to the streets under the banner "Reclaim the Night," calling for safer public spaces for women and justice in the rape and murder case. The protests began at 11:55 p.m., coinciding with Independence Day celebrations, and spread across key areas in both small towns and major cities, including several landmarks in Kolkata.

A torch march led by Communist Party of India (Marxist) youth leader Meenakshi Mukherjee took place in front of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, organized jointly by DYFI, SFI, and AIDWA.

Reacting to the vandalism incident, Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) leader Suvendu Adhikari claimed that Mamata Banerjee had sent her Trinamool Congress (TMC) supporters to disrupt the apolitical protest rally near RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

“Mamata Banerjee has sent her TMC goons to the apolitical Protest Rally near R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. She thinks that she is the most shrewd person in the whole world and people won’t be able to figure out the cunning plan that her goons appearing as protestors would mix with the crowd and carry out vandalism inside the R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital,” Adhikari wrote in a post on X.

On August 9, the deceased, a postgraduate trainee in the chest medicine department, was found dead in the seminar hall of the hospital's Emergency building.

The principal of the institution, Prof. (Dr.) Sandip Ghosh on August 12 resigned in response to the backlash over the brutal rape and murder of the postgraduate trainee doctor. However, rather than accepting his resignation, the TMC-led West Bengal government transferred him to serve as the principal of Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is now investigating the rape and murder case that has shocked the nation. The central agency assumed control of the investigation after the Calcutta High Court observed that the Kolkata Police had made no significant progress and transferred the case to the CBI. The victim's parents had filed a petition requesting that the probe be monitored by the court to ensure that evidence is not tampered with.
