In a sharp and unusual public rebuke, Union Minister of State for Cooperation and Faridabad MP Krishan Pal Gurjar criticised the functioning of the city’s civic administration during an official review meeting on Tuesday (May 12), accusing it of widespread irregularities and poor governance.

The remarks were made while Gurjar chaired a meeting of the District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee, where he openly expressed dissatisfaction with the performance of the Faridabad Municipal Corporation, which is governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

According to reports, the minister criticised officials over deteriorating infrastructure, questionable expenditure and alleged corruption within civic works.

Addressing senior engineers and administrative officers, including the corporation’s chief engineer and other officials, Gurjar alleged that public funds were being misused through contractors even as roads and civic facilities deteriorated rapidly, The Tribune reported.

Highlighting concerns about construction quality and oversight failures, he said, “Roads are breaking even before completing their lifespan. Inferior material is being used in interlocking tile work and sewer projects. The city has been turned into a den of loot.”

He further admonished officials over alleged financial irregularities, telling them, “You gorge on the money while the government gets a bad name.”

The minister also questioned plantation drives carried out by the corporation, alleging large-scale billing without visible outcomes.

“Trees worth Rs 10 crore have been planted, but no one knows where those are. It is published in newspapers every day,” he said.

The meeting drew political attention after Deepender Singh Hooda shared a video clip of the proceedings on social media platform X, using the comments to criticise the ruling party.

BJP MLA Dhanesh Adlakha, who was present at the meeting, also criticised the civic body and described it as a “hub for brokers,” adding, “We have also worked in the corporation for 20 years. The roads made 10 years ago are still not damaged, but the roads built over the past decade are broken every few years.”

Other leaders attending the review included former Haryana minister and Ballabhgarh BJP MLA Mool Chand Sharma, NIT BJP MLA Satish Phagna and Congress Prithla MLA Raghubir Tewatia.

The strong criticism from within the ruling establishment has intensified scrutiny of civic governance in Faridabad, with opposition parties seizing upon the minister’s remarks to question the administration’s functioning.
