The Congress party launched a scathing attack on the Narendra Modi-led government on Wednesday (June 25), accusing it of waging an “undeclared emergency” over the past eleven years that has systematically undermined Indian democracy.
Marking what it described as “Undeclared Emergency@11,” the opposition party alleged widespread assaults on civil liberties, institutional independence, and constitutional values.
In a sharply worded statement, Congress general secretary in-charge of communications, Jairam Ramesh, said that since 2014, India has witnessed a “five-fold assault” on democracy that includes attacks on the Constitution, tax-related harassment of businesses and institutions, suppression of the media, misuse of investigative agencies, and the targeting of dissenters.
Ramesh said the government has normalized the demonization of critics and the vilification of peaceful protestors.
“Farmers demanding their rights were branded as Khalistanis, while those supporting a caste census were dismissed as urban Naxals,” he said.
Accusing the BJP of enabling hate speech and religious polarization, Ramesh said, “The very individuals who glorify the killers of Mahatma Gandhi are being celebrated. Minority communities live in fear for their safety and property. Marginalized groups, especially Dalits, are being disproportionately targeted. Shockingly, ministers who make hate-filled remarks are being rewarded with promotions.”
The Congress statement coincided with the Modi government’s observance of ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ (Constitution Murder Day), held on the 50th anniversary of the 1975 Emergency imposed by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Ramesh contrasted the official commemoration with what he described as the current regime’s “undeclared emergency,” claiming the present political environment is marked by far-reaching suppression of rights and freedoms.
He warned that the erosion of democratic values is ongoing and systematic, even if it has not taken the legal form of an official Emergency.
“Over the past eleven years and thirty days, Indian democracy has been under a systematic and dangerous five-fold assault that can be best described as Undeclared Emergency@11,” Ramesh said, calling for renewed vigilance in defense of constitutional governance.
