Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and Birbhum strongman Anubrata Mondal is once again at the centre of controversy after an audio clip surfaced allegedly capturing him using abusive language during a phone call with a police inspector. The incident has led to an FIR being filed against him, with the party publicly censuring the senior leader and distancing itself from his remarks.

The controversy prompted the police to file an FIR against him, even as the TMC publicly censured the senior leader and distanced itself from his remarks.

According to police sources, Mondal had called Bolpur police station Inspector-in-Charge (IC) Litan Halder on Wednesday and allegedly hurled abuses at him and his family.

The IC reportedly recorded the conversation and escalated it to senior officers, eventually alerting the Chief Minister’s Office. Following this, the TMC leadership acted swiftly, demanding an apology and prompting state police headquarters to instruct that an FIR be lodged.

Reacting to the incident, Mondal issued a written apology, expressing remorse for his conduct.

“I am sad about the recent incident. I can apologise to Didi’s police a hundred times,” he wrote, referring to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who also oversees the state police as home minister.

While acknowledging his outburst, Mondal claimed it was triggered by certain allegations against the police and questioned how the BJP had obtained the call recording, suggesting a possible conspiracy.

“If any police officer was hurt by my behaviour, I apologise,” he added.

The TMC, in a strongly worded post on X, condemned Mondal’s remarks, calling them “derogatory and unacceptable,” and disassociated the party from his statements. The party instructed him to issue an unconditional apology within four hours or face disciplinary action.

“The party unequivocally disassociates and does not endorse the comments made by Anubrata Mondal against a police officer. We strongly condemn his use of derogatory & unacceptable abusive language. The party hereby instructs him to tender an unconditional apology within the next four hours, failing which show cause proceedings will be initiated,” the post said.

Birbhum Superintendent of Police Amandeep Singh confirmed that a case had been registered based on the complaint from IC Litan Halder.

“We filed an FIR and will take strong action within the legal framework,” he stated.

Mondal, once a powerful figure in Birbhum politics, was removed from the post of district party president in a recent organisational overhaul. A core committee now leads the unit, with senior MLA Ashis Banerjee as chairperson and Mondal serving as a member.

In 2022, Mondal had been arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with an alleged cattle smuggling case and was released on bail last year.
