A day after violence erupted in Uttar Pradesh's Sambhal, resulting in four deaths, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi accused the BJP government of fostering communal discord for political gain. Gandhi urged the Supreme Court to intervene promptly and restore justice in the matter.
In a post on X, Gandhi expressed condolences to the bereaved families and criticized the state government’s handling of the situation.
“The biased and hasty approach of the state government in handling the recent dispute in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, is deeply unfortunate. I extend my heartfelt condolences to those who have lost their loved ones in the violence and firing,” he wrote in Hindi.
“The administration's actions, taken without consulting all parties and handled insensitively, have exacerbated the situation, leading to the tragic loss of lives. The BJP government bears direct responsibility for this outcome,” he added.
He accused the BJP of using its power to stoke divisions between Hindus and Muslims, warning that such tactics harm not just Uttar Pradesh but the entire country.
“The BJP’s misuse of power to foster division and discrimination between Hindu and Muslim communities is detrimental to both the state and the nation. I urge the Supreme Court to intervene promptly in this matter and ensure justice is served,” Gandhi wrote.
Gandhi called for peace and unity, asserting, "I appeal to everyone to maintain peace and mutual harmony. Together, we must strive to ensure that India progresses on the path of unity and adherence to the Constitution, rejecting communalism and hatred.”
Following the unrest, prohibitory orders under Section 144 were imposed in Sambhal until November 30, with internet services suspended for 24 hours and schools closed on Monday.
Tensions in the district had been simmering since November 19, when a court-ordered survey of the Jama Masjid began, based on a petition claiming the mosque stood on the site of an ancient Harihar temple. Trouble erupted Sunday morning when a large crowd gathered near the mosque and began shouting slogans, disrupting the survey team’s work.
According to Moradabad Divisional Commissioner Aunjaneya Kumar Singh, the deceased were identified as Naeem, Noman, and Bilal.
A fourth victim succumbed to injuries later. Over 15 security personnel, including a deputy collector and a circle officer, were also injured in the clashes, reported PTI.
Singh alleged that shots were fired by miscreants during the unrest, resulting in a police officer suffering a gunshot wound and other personnel sustaining injuries from stone pelting and pellets.
The Congress party condemned the Yogi Adityanath-led government, holding it responsible for the deaths and accusing the BJP-RSS of undermining peace and harmony in Sambhal. The party described the administration’s actions as a failure to uphold justice and a catalyst for communal unrest.
Authorities stated the survey, initially delayed to avoid interference with Friday prayers, would resume under strict security measures. Meanwhile, political and social leaders continue to call for calm in the region.
