West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday (August 12), announced that she will transfer the case of the brutal rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata's R G Kar Medical College & Hospital to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) if the police do not resolve it by Sunday.

“If the police are unable to solve this by Sunday, we will hand over the case to the CBI. However, the success rate of the central probe agency is very low,” news agency PTI quoted Banerjee as saying.

Amidst backlash over the rape and murder of the female doctor, Prof. (Dr.) Sandip Ghosh, the principal of RG Kar Medical College & Hospital, resigned from his position on Monday morning.

“I cannot take this insult anymore. All the allegations raised against me are false and fabricated. A student movement has been incited to remove me. There is a political mind behind this. I had informed police within an hour of the incident. CCTV footage has been handed over to police,” Ghosh told PTI

Meanwhile, the autopsy of the 28-year-old victim disclosed disturbing details about the injuries she sustained. According to the report, the crime occurred between 3 and 6 p.m. The victim had bleeding from both her eyes and mouth, along with injuries to her face, nails, and private parts. Additional injuries were noted on her belly, left leg, neck, right hand, right finger, and lips, PTI reported.

On Friday, the deceased, a postgraduate trainee in the chest medicine department, was found dead in the seminar hall of the hospital's Emergency building. Her family had alleged that she was raped and murdered.

Following the incident, junior doctors, interns, and postgraduate trainees at all government-run hospitals in the state are on a continued strike, demanding justice for the victim and improved safety measures at their institutions.

Doctors across several hospitals in India too have called for an indefinite strike to protest the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor. Medical professionals in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and other cities have announced that all elective services will be suspended until the investigation into the case is concluded.
