The Trinamool Congress (TMC)-led West Bengal government has appointed Prof. (Dr.) Sandip Ghosh, who recently resigned as the principal of RG Kar Medical College & Hospital, as the new principal of Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital (CNMCH).

Ghosh resigned on Monday in response to the backlash over the brutal rape and murder of a female postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital. However, rather than accepting his resignation, the government has transferred him to serve as the principal of CNMCH. His new appointment has further intensified the outrage among the protesting students.

The government has also appointed Dr. Suhita Pal, currently the Officer on Special Duty (OSD) at Swasthya Bhaban (Health Department), as the new principal of RG Kar Medical College & Hospital.

According to a West Bengal government order, Dr. Ajay Roy, who was serving as the principal of Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital (CNMCH), will now take on the role of OSD in the Health Department.

On Monday, state chief minister Mamata Banerjee visited the victim's family and promised justice. She announced that the case would be transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) if the police did not resolve it by Sunday.

Meanwhile, the CCTV footage from the crime scene has not been released yet. Authorities have claimed that the CCTV cameras in both the pulmonology department and the seminar hall were not functioning on the day of the incident.

On August 9, the deceased, a postgraduate trainee in the chest medicine department, was found dead in the seminar hall of the hospital's Emergency building. Her family had alleged that she was raped and murdered.

Following the incident, junior doctors, interns, and postgraduate trainees at all government-run hospitals in the state are on a continued strike, demanding justice for the victim and improved safety measures at their institutions.

Doctors across several hospitals in India too have called for an indefinite strike to protest the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor. Medical professionals in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and other cities have announced that all elective services will be suspended until the investigation into the case is concluded.
