RG Kar Vandalism: Police Summons Minakshi Mukherjee, 6 CPI(M) Youth Leaders; 30 Arrested, Including TMC Workers and Teens

The Kolkata police on Saturday (August 17) summoned several Left leaders for questioning, including Minakshi Mukherjee, the West Bengal secretary of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), and six other state-level youth and student leaders from the CPI(M).

The summons pertains to the vandalism at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on the night of August 14, which occurred during midnight protests demanding justice for a 31-year-old trainee doctor. The police have directed the CPI(M) leaders to report for interrogation within 72 hours of receiving the notice.

Unidentified miscreants forcibly entered the hospital premises shortly after midnight on Thursday, during the midnight protests by women against the alleged rape and murder of the young doctor. The vandals, who were posing as protesters, breached the hospital grounds, threw stones at officers, and damaged property.

The names of CPI(M)’s youth organization DYFI and the BJP have been implicated in this incident by the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) government.

None other than state chief minister Mamata Banerjee on August 15 accused the CPI(M) and BJP of orchestrating a "coordinated" effort to politicize the rape and murder of the junior doctor.

She said, “It was not done by the students (doctors). I don’t blame them. Some outsiders, political people, want to create unrest in Bengal. Bam and Ram (Left and the BJP) joined hands to do this. They had gone there to score brownie points from the protest. They don’t want peace. Those who carried the national flag in the movement were BJP (party workers). Apart from this, DYFI flags were also seen.”

Meanwhile, according to The Indian Express, the police have arrested two TMC workers, several men in their teens or twenties, and a couple of women in connection with the vandalism at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on the night of August 14.

So far, 30 people have been arrested after the police released 76 photos of individuals allegedly involved in the vandalism.

Most of the arrested individuals live within a five-kilometre radius of the hospital. They had informed their families that they were going to protest against the rape and murder that night but later became implicated in the vandalism.
