On Tuesday (December 17), Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal introduced the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024, also known as the "One Nation, One Election" Bill, in the Lok Sabha.
The bill proposes the simultaneous conduct of Lok Sabha and state assembly elections. Additionally, the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024 was introduced, aiming to synchronize election schedules for the union territories of Jammu and Kashmir, Puducherry, and the National Capital Territory of Delhi.
In response, several opposition parties including Shiv Sena (UBT), Aam Aadmi Party, Congress, and Samajwadi Party demanded the immediate withdrawal of the bills.
However, the NDA MPs urged Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to refer the bills to a Joint Parliamentary Committee for further examination.
Samajwadi Party MP Dharmendra Yadav opposed the One Nation, One Election bill, accusing the BJP of attempting to impose a “dictatorship” on the country.
Congress leader Manish Tewari also raised concerns, stating that the introduction and consideration of the bill exceeded the legislative competence of the Lok Sabha, urging the government to withdraw it.
Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee, similarly criticized the bill, claiming that it was not about electoral reforms but rather aimed at fulfilling the personal ambitions of a few.
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, described the "One Nation, One Election" bill as the first step toward the RSS and Prime Minister Modi’s real objective.
Speaking to ANI, Ramesh said, “The One Nation, One Election Bill is only the first milestone; the real objective is to bring a new constitution. Amending the Constitution is one thing, but bringing a new Constitution is the real objective of the RSS and PM Modi.”
Meanwhile, the Constitution debate continued in the Rajya Sabha, where Leader of the House JP Nadda attacked the Opposition’s position. Nadda stated that Dr. B.R. Ambedkar had opposed the inclusion of the word ‘secular’ in the Preamble of the Constitution.
He argued that debates on the Constitution only strengthen it and criticized the Opposition’s claims that the Modi government controls the media.
Nadda also praised the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, claiming it strengthened the Constitution.
Additionally, he noted that Dr. Ambedkar had advocated against reservation based on religion, and blamed the Opposition for continuing to misinterpret the Constitution for political gain.
He demanded a debate on reservation, as Opposition MPs voiced their objections during the session
