Naveen Patnaik was unanimously re-elected as the president of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) for the ninth consecutive term on Saturday (April 19).

The announcement was made during the party’s state council meeting held at its headquarters, Sankha Bhawan, in Bhubaneswar, reported PTI.

Patnaik, who founded the BJD in 1997, was the sole nominee for the top post.

PK Deb, the returning officer for the party’s organisational elections, declared Patnaik's uncontested victory and confirmed his continued leadership of the regional outfit that has governed Odisha for over two decades.

The announcement was met with celebrations by party members, as district-level leaders presented Patnaik with flowers, traditional paintings, and offerings including Lord Jagannath’s ‘Anga Bastra’ and ‘Maha Prasad’ as tokens of reverence and support.

During the meeting, it was also revealed that out of the BJD’s 355-member state council, 80 members have been elected to the party's state executive committee.
