Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday (June 3), accusing him of capitulating to former US President Donald Trump's call for a ceasefire during last month’s military conflict with Pakistan.

Speaking at a Congress workers’ meeting in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, Gandhi alleged that Trump had effectively ordered Modi to surrender during the crisis, and the Prime Minister had complied without resistance.

"Trump gave a signal, picked up the phone, and asked Modi, “What are you doing? Narendra... surrender.” And, saying “Yes, sir,” Narendra Modi followed Trump’s instructions," Gandhi said, suggesting that the BJP and its ideological parent, the RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh), easily crumble under international pressure.

" I now know the BJP-RSS people very well. Apply a little pressure on them, and they get scared."

The Congress leader's remarks come amid mounting pressure from the opposition for a special session of Parliament to deliberate on the Pahalgam terror attack, India’s military response through Operation Sindoor, and the subsequent ceasefire.

The demand has gained momentum following Trump’s repeated claims that he personally mediated the ceasefire and used trade negotiations to prevent a nuclear escalation between India and Pakistan.

Drawing a sharp contrast with past leadership, Gandhi invoked the 1971 war with Pakistan.

"You may recall a time when it wasn’t just a phone call, but the Seventh Fleet had arrived with weapons and aircraft carriers. Indira Gandhi said, “I will do what I have to do.” This is the difference,” he said.

He accused the BJP of historical cowardice, referencing the freedom movement.

“This is their character. All of them are the same. Since the time of the independence struggle, they have had the habit of writing surrender letters. Even a moment's pressure, and they give up. This is their character. The Congress party does not surrender. Gandhi, Sardar Patel, and Jawaharlal Nehru were not the kind to surrender—they were the ones who stood up to superpowers,” he said.

Despite India’s official denial of Trump’s version of events, Prime Minister Modi has yet to publicly respond to the claims.

Meanwhile, a recent filing by the Trump administration in a New York federal court claimed that the former president used trade access as leverage to prevent a full-scale war betwee n the two South Asian nations.
