Mohan Charan Majhi, the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) MLA from Keonjha, took oath as Odisha’s new chief minister on Saturday (June 12). Governor Raghubar Das administered him the oath to office.

BJP leaders KV Singh Deo and Pravati Parida also took oath as Deputy CMs, with Parida becoming the state’s first woman Deputy CM.

The tribal leader was unanimously elected for the coveted post after a legislature meeting, held in Bhubaneshwar on Tuesday, in the presence of the party’s central observers Rajnath Singh and Bhupendra Yadav.

Manjhi’s name was announced by Rajnath Singh. In the process, the state got a new CM after twenty-four long years, which was governed by Naveen Patnaik.

The swearing-in ceremony took place at Janta Maidan in Bhubaneswar and was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Ministers Dharmendra Pradhan, JP Nadda, Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath and other top BJP leaders.

Outgoing CM Naveen Patnaik was also present during the swearing-in ceremony.

Mohan Charan Majhi clinched victory in the Keonjhar Assembly constituency in Odisha, triumphing over Biju Janata Dal's (BJD) Mina Majhi by a margin of 11,577 votes.

BJP won the recently concluded state assembly elections, by winning 78 out of the 147 assembly seats. The BJD won 51 seats.
