A political controversy has erupted over the attendance of Subir Karmakar, an inspector in charge (IC) of the Manikchak police station in Malda district, at a Trinamool Congress (TMC) event while in uniform.

The incident has sparked concerns from the opposition regarding the neutrality of police officials.

Karmakar was invited by TMC's block chief and MLA, Sabitri Mitra, to attend the party's ‘Bijoya Sammilani’ and ‘Sharad Samman’ program at the Manikchak block community hall.

During the event, seventy-eight Durga Puja committees received ‘Sharad Samman’ awards. Alongside MLA Mitra, TMC Malda district president Abdur Rahim Bakshi, party youth wing district chief Biswajit Mondal, and INTTUC’s district chief Subhankar Sanyal were also present.

The opposition has voiced their discontent, asserting that Karmakar took the stage as the "chief guest."

A CPI(M) leader in Kolkata said, “The police and the TMC are in collusion in West Bengal; you cannot separate one from the other.”

“The Manikchak incident comes as no surprise given the political climate since Mamata Banerjee took office in 2011,” he added.

In defence, TMC district president Abdur Rahim has argued that the program was not exclusively a party event and welcomed anyone to attend. He insisted that Karmakar's presence was justified.

Superintendent of Police Pradeep Kumar Yadav confirmed that the situation is currently under investigation.
