Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Friday (January 31), accused the Yogi Adityanath-led government of hiding the death toll from the stampede at the Maha Kumbh.
Yadav also urged the Uttar Pradesh government to provide essential support, including medical care, food, and clothing, to the devotees affected by the tragedy.
His remarks came after at least 30 people were confirmed dead and 60 injured in a stampede at the Sangam area early Wednesday, as millions of pilgrims struggled for space to take a dip during the auspicious 'Mauni Amavasya'.
In a post on X, the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister suggested several measures for the state's response to the crisis. He called for the opening of dhabas at various locations around the clock, along with organizing community bhandaras to provide food and water.

"An appeal should be made to keep dhabas open day and night at various locations to provide food and water, along with organizing bhandaras. Arrangements should be made to transport medical and paramedical staff from across the state to those trapped in remote areas using volunteers' two-wheelers,” Yadav said in his post.
Yadav also emphasized the need for uninterrupted fuel supplies for vehicles stuck for miles around the Maha Kumbh and across the state. He recommended that medicine shops remain open 24/7 and demanded that victims be provided with clothes and blankets.
"The supply of petrol and diesel should be ensured for vehicles stranded for miles around Maha Kumbh and across the state. Medicine shops should be allowed to remain open 24/7. Clothes and blankets should be distributed to those in need,” he added.
The former chief minister criticized the government's priorities, stating, "When thousands of crores are being spent on publicity and suppressing news of accidents, why is the government hesitating to spend a few crores to help the victims?”
