In a move that reshapes the leadership structure of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Tejashwi Yadav has been named the party’s working president, a decision announced by party supremo and his father Lalu Prasad Yadav at a ceremony in Patna.

The appointment places Tejashwi firmly at the centre of Bihar’s opposition politics, even as it brings simmering family tensions into sharper public focus.

Lalu Prasad Yadav, the veteran leader and former three-time chief minister of Bihar, formally endorsed his younger son for the role, underlining his confidence in Tejashwi at a time when the party faces both organisational and electoral challenges.

The decision comes against the backdrop of visible discord within the Yadav family, particularly following remarks by Lalu’s daughter Rohini Acharya, who has spoken openly about an alleged conspiracy within the family.

“This is a crucial moment for our party, and I trust Tejashwi will lead us effectively in these challenging times,” Lalu Prasad Yadav stated during the event.

Tejashwi’s elevation follows a turbulent phase for the RJD, which has struggled to reclaim its earlier political dominance in Bihar.

As the party looks ahead to forthcoming elections, his appointment is being viewed as an attempt to project a younger leadership and recalibrate strategies to appeal to a new generation of voters.

Rohini Acharya’s public comments have added a layer of complexity to the development, drawing attention to internal family equations and debates over authority and succession within the RJD. Her reference to a “conspiracy” has fuelled speculation about deeper divisions that could test party cohesion in the near future.

Once the pre-eminent political force in Bihar with a strong base among backward caste communities, the RJD has seen its influence erode over time.

Calls for renewal and sharper leadership have grown louder, and Tejashwi Yadav, who has previously served as Bihar’s Deputy Chief Minister, is now expected to shoulder the responsibility of revitalising the party’s organisation, narrative and outreach.

Political observers interpret the move as both a calculated organisational step and a response to evolving family dynamics within the party’s first family.

How Tejashwi balances his expanded role, navigates internal differences and prepares the RJD for upcoming electoral battles will be closely watched in the months ahead.
